Penguin Parade summer 2026-27

Summer is when the Penguin Parade sells out, night after night. The sun sets after 8:30 pm, the chicks are in the burrows, and the stands fill with families on holiday.

Phillip Island Nature Parks names three peak periods: mid December to late January, long weekends and school holidays. In summer 2026-27 they overlap for almost six weeks.

Here are the dates that matter, how often the parade has sold out in recent summers, what time the penguins come in, and what has changed on site since last year. Everything is as published on 21 October 2026.

The quick answer

The Victorian summer school holidays run from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, and that is the busiest stretch. The parade sold out 47 nights from December 2024 to February 2025, and 19 nights of the 2025-26 summer were gone by 10 December. Penguins come in at about 8:30 to 8:45 pm; arrive an hour earlier. Book as soon as your date is fixed.

When is peak season at the Penguin Parade in 2026-27?

From Saturday 19 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, plus the Melbourne Cup long weekend and Labour Day in March.

Nature Parks' opening times page tells visitors to allow extra travel time "from mid-December to late January, during long weekends, or during school holidays". Term 4 in Victorian government schools ends on Friday 18 December 2026, and Term 1 of 2027 starts on Wednesday 27 January, with students back on Thursday 28 January (Victorian Government term dates). That leaves a holiday block of just under six weeks.

Public holidays stack on top. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so Victoria adds a holiday on Monday 28 December (Business Victoria). Australia Day 2027 is a Tuesday, the last full day before school goes back (2027 list). International demand adds a second wave: China is the parade's biggest overseas market, 17% of visitors in 2025 according to Nature Parks, and Lunar New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027.

Does the Penguin Parade sell out in summer?

Yes, and more each year. There were 47 sell-out nights between December 2024 and February 2025, and 131 across the 2024-25 financial year.

The Victorian Government called the 2024-25 summer "remarkable", with a record 47 sell-out nights from December to February (Premier of Victoria, 14 March 2025). In December 2025 Nature Parks reported 131 sell-out nights across the 2024-25 financial year, 52 over the summer holidays alone, and 19 nights of December and January 2026 already sold out by 10 December (Nature Parks news). By late November 2025 the parade had drawn 709,673 visitors for the year.

Selling out is only half the problem. Over December and January, General Viewing seats are "limited and not guaranteed", with standing room as the fallback, so a General ticket on a full night can mean standing behind the stand. Arrive early or buy a ticket with reserved seats.

Can you buy on the day? The terms say visitors without pre-purchased tickets pay the full entry fee, which suggests door sales exist when there is space. On a sold-out night in January there will not be any. Don't drive two hours on that bet.

Which ticket should you book for a summer visit?

General Viewing is fine if you arrive early. For a guaranteed seat with children in the school holidays, look at the Family Wildlife Tour.

Official prices in October 2026 on the Penguin Parade page: General Viewing A$34 adult, A$17 child (4 to 15), A$85 family. Penguins Plus, in a separate stand closer to the penguin path, is A$93 adult. The Family Wildlife Tour, normally Friday and Saturday only, runs nightly in school holidays and adds a guided talk and reserved General Viewing seats for A$87.50 adult, A$43.75 child.

Our pick for a peak night with kids is the Family Wildlife Tour: it removes the scramble for seats. For adults, General Viewing plus an early arrival is the value choice. Book through a seller that lets you cancel. Official tickets are non-refundable, weather included, while the General Viewing ticket on GetYourGuide (from $24) cancels free up to 2 days before. The 3 Parks Pass adds the Koala Reserve and Churchill Island, usable on other days within 6 months.

No car? Day tours sell out in the holidays too, and in summer they get you back late, up to midnight. Compare them in our tours from Melbourne guide.

What time do the penguins arrive in summer?

At sunset, which is between about 8:25 and 8:45 pm from December to January. Arrive at least an hour before that.

The penguins come ashore at sunset every night of the year. Nature Parks publishes an arrival calendar; resellers that reproduce it give about 8:30 pm for December, 8:45 pm for January and 8:30 pm for February. The official advice is to be in place at least one hour before the penguins for General Viewing, Penguins Plus and Premium, and 30 minutes before for Underground (opening times).

The sunset times below are calculated for Summerlands; timeanddate.com has the Melbourne table for any date. Add the drive: 90 to 120 minutes from Melbourne and a further 20 minutes from the bridge, more on a holiday Saturday with traffic queued at San Remo. If you leave the city at 5 pm on 27 December, you are cutting it fine. Leave by 3:30 pm and have dinner on the island.

The parade finishes late. With the walk back and a two-hour drive, a summer visit puts you home around midnight. Plan for tired kids. More in our arrival times guide.

What is new at the Penguin Parade this summer?

A new Premium viewing platform and a rebuilt boardwalk behind the General stands, both finished in December 2025. Works continue, so the boardwalk toilets are closed until February 2027.

The parade is in the middle of a staged rebuild, listed on the Nature Parks projects page. Stage 1, finished in December 2024, added the accessible Shearwater Boardwalk and upgraded the Penguins Plus stand, with $5 million from the state government. Stage 2, finished in December 2025, added the Premium viewing platform and the boardwalk behind the General Viewing stands. This is the first full summer with both.

Stage 3 is under way: new amenities, a new viewing area and a return boardwalk to the Visitor Centre. Its first phase runs from March 2026 to February 2027, and during it the boardwalk toilets are unavailable. Go before you walk down, at the Visitor Centre or the bus car park. The mobility buggy is not running during construction; wheelchairs are available on request on 03 5951 2830. Evening viewing is not affected.

One more change on the island: the Nobbies Centre is still closed, toilets included. Details in our Nobbies closure post.

Will bird flu affect the Penguin Parade this summer?

Not for visitors, so far. H5 bird flu has been found on Phillip Island and some penguins were vaccinated in August and September 2026, but the parade is open as normal.

H5 avian influenza reached Australia in June 2026. A little penguin on Phillip Island tested positive on 15 August 2026, the first penguin case in Victoria (The Nightly). Days later Nature Parks began what it calls the world's largest vaccination program for wild birds, approved for up to 5,000 penguins at the parade, with each bird caught as it comes ashore, checked, microchipped and vaccinated, then given a booster about 21 to 28 days later (Nature Parks vaccination page).

For visitors the message is simple. The Penguin Parade remains "open and operating as normal", the risk to people is described as low, and the usual rules apply. Vaccination is a protection, not a guarantee, as the state government said in August. Breeding runs from August to February, so the summer parade still comes with chicks in the burrows. Nobody can promise a number of penguins on your night.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Penguin Parade tickets on the day in January?

What time should I arrive at the Penguin Parade in summer?

At least an hour before the penguins, so about 7:30 pm in December and January, when sunset is around 8:30 to 8:45 pm. Add time for holiday traffic at the San Remo bridge.

When are the Victorian summer school holidays in 2026-27?

From Saturday 19 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Term 4 ends on Friday 18 December and students go back on Thursday 28 January 2027.
